- Newer modems are _supposed_ to be compatible with older ones, i.e. they have
- older protocols built in and negotiation code in order to try to match the
- capabilities of an older modem while connecting. However, realistically,
- older modems may be confused by the signals sent by newer modems and fail to
- connect. Sometimes there are settings that you can tweak to reduce the
- problems, but there are no guarantees.
